Fresh Snow Changes Everything
Snow is a houndsman’s best friend. A fresh skiff tells us exactly where a tom has been and where he’s headed.
Fresh tracks stand out against white snow, making it easier to judge a tom’s size and direction of travel.
Cooler temperatures keep our hounds fresh, and lions tend to tree quicker. Many hunts end with a treed cat in just hours.
Arizona produces heavy, mature toms with thick winter coats.
From First Light to the Tree
Every snow hunt is different, but most days follow the same rhythm.
We check roads for fresh tracks by 4x4 truck and tracked side-by-side. Each hunt has at least one houndsman plus a helper looking for tracks.
Once we find a good tom track, the hounds go on it at legal light. We follow them with GPS collars.
We walk in with the dogs and help them when needed. Expect cold, elevation and some hiking or snowshoeing.
Lions here usually climb a big ponderosa or juniper, or bay up in the rocks. Shots run from about 40 yards to point blank, so be ready to shoot fast.
The Engine of Every Lion Hunt
Our hounds are the engine of every lion hunt. Cold snow days keep them fresh, and GPS collars let us stay on the race from the first bawl to the tree.
Pressure-Free Country Others Can’t Reach
Most outfitters are limited to roads or foot travel once the snow flies. We run UTVs with snow tracks, so we can reach remote, pressure-free country where mature toms grow old. Covering this much snowy country also gives you a great chance to find some elusive elk sheds.
